I’ve recently been horrified by the amount of GMO products on the market and really get frustrated going to the grocery store because I feel like the food available there is not what my body needs. After traveling so much this past year and seeing the way people are revolutionizing their food, it was hard to return to Alabama. I love my home state but although people think a lot of food is grown here—it’s not. Driving around the back roads you’ll notice how barren the state is. It’s a sad story. Alabama reached a point where we had all left the farms behind in search of the American dream. Slowly but surely, the generation I grew up with is realizing that sustainability and really freakin good food is the American dream. It makes sense. We are a generation that does what feels good and diabetes and heart disease certainly aren’t on that list. We are learning from the older generations as we watch them die away that we can, in fact, do better. Birmingham is a great example. The younger generation, small in numbers though we may be, has a huge drive to make the city a better place mainly for the love of the place we live and the family that surrounds us. It’s gaining ground—many new local foods markets opening, new breweries making some pretty amazing beer, tons of music venues catering to both local and national bands, and a community that grows every day. I wanted to play a part in all of this and I felt living the “pre-packaged” lifestyle wasn’t the way to do it. I started researching recipes dealing with mainly produce and came across so many raw recipes that looked amazing. Now to be clear, I am not doing this to lose weight or make a political statement. I am doing this for my health and to contribute to my local economy. After researching and finding out that raw foods have been known to improve skin, hair, teeth, overall general health, and increase lifespan, I really couldn’t resist. I still plan on eating some baked grains, dairy, and meat but way less than the normal American diet. I began yesterday after returning from a shopping trip that cost me more than $200. The initial investment seemed like a lot but I believe it will be worth it. I weighed myself last night before bed and this morning after my smoothie—currently I am between 155-160 lbs. This is not an unhealthy weight for me though it is on the top side of my height class. I’ve also been hibernating all winter so I tend to be heavier as soon as warm weather hits. Last summer, I bottomed out at 140-145 lbs and I looked super skinny. Anyways, I’ve also been having trouble with pains in my left arm and neck (supposedly fibermyalgia) which can be connected to a diet high in gluten. In my daily life I have had low energy and a general disinterest and boredom which has never transgressed this amount of time before. I knew something had to change if I wanted to live longer and enjoy life more. This is a stepping stone and hopefully a base to build off of. I’m enjoying the “cooking” aspect of it so far and the brownies I made last night are pretty kickin.
